Shuffering and Shnacking

My Top 3 Nick Ashford (1942-2011) Songs

Ashford & Simpson – “Bourgie Bourgie” 1977 – Classic disco and one of my favorite Ashford and Simpson compositions. This was a big Larry Levan cut.

Marlena Shaw – “California Soul” 1969 – Written in ’68 by Ashford & Simpson and originally performed by The 5th Dimension, the Marlena Shaw version is the recording I am most partial to. I remember the day, about 10 years ago, when I finally found a copy of this record vividly.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – “Who’s Gonna Take The Blame” 1970 – Great semi-late period Miracles cut with Funk Brothers backing them. Their next single, “Tears of a Clown”, was a much bigger hit but I prefer this to their other work from the period. The slow vibe and string accents are just classic. You might recognize the intro as being the key ingredient from Capone N Noreaga’s “Live on Live Long”.
